Mirtos is a small village on Cretes south-coast.- it is 14 kilometres away west from Ierapetra, the only city in Cretes south. Although it has ideal conditions for tourisms, it has not been completely rebuild for tourist as other villages on the island. It is still a traditional village that lives from tourism as well as agriculture.

Many people from many different cultures have fallen in love with the village and come at least once a year. For a small village there is a big considerable international community, People who have decided to stay permanently and live there with their families.

The majority of tourism is of an individual nature, therefore it is less suitable for people who enjoy a vibrant nightlife, discotheque and strip-clubs. For this reason it little affected by mass-tourism and mostly attracts backpackers and families with children.

The area has other charms too: The Chrissi-Island for example, the jewel region. Even in peak season, when thousands of tourists come to the island, one can still relax on the beautiful, quit beaches with their clear, turquoise water.

The Chrissi-Island is only eight miles from Mirtos. A visit is especially worthwhile when one rents a small boat to go there instead of taking the ferry. The mainland is rich in peaceful lonely bays, which are beautifully surrounded by cliffs. It also offers hiking-routes on the nearby mountains.   (for example the famous Canyon of Mithi), a 3000 year-old minionic archaeological excavation, that is not only fascinating for anyone interested in history, but also for romantics who come to see the dazzling sunsets that can be viewed from the site.

In spring Mirtos is rich with the fragrances of “JASMINE”, oranges, lemons and a wide variety of Mediterranean herbs like “OREGANO”, salvia, mint, thyme and rosemary. Fall is the season of mistletoe and carob trees, which overflow with sweet fruit. It is the season of figs, pomegranates, walnuts and the distilling of Raki (Raki is the local liquor, made from grapes, quit similar to Grappa). Winters are so mild on Crete one can go swimming until December, there is hardly any tourism, but Mirtos remains a lively village, offering anyone the chance to experience life on the island much more closely than at any other time of the year.

Mirtos is worth visiting all around the year, to experience its irresistible charms.

Between May and October there is hardly any rain.  Cloudbanks, edged on by the north wind, are stopped by the mountain chains protecting Mirtos. This part of the south coast is always sunny. Even when stormy north winds blow from the valley around Lerapetra towards the Chrissi-Island, Mirtos has west- or south wind. South- and west winds are to be expected on four to five days a week, ranging from a strength of three to five beau fort, especially in the months of April/May and September/October
